Opportunity Jesus: Trust in God’s Timing

Crosspointejupiter   -

In chapter 3 we see Jesus’ first public miracle as he turns water into fine wine at a wedding in Cana. In this, “Jesus demonstrates that a fresh order and new covenant of His blood shed will come to transform the old law and way of life” (p. 27). It points to the new life Jesus brings through his life, death and resurrection.

In the curious interaction with His mom (which the book explains beautiful), Jesus says “My hour has not yet come’, (John 2:4) i.e. “it’s not time for the kingdom.”

We see two levels of trusting in God’s timing:

  1. We see Jesus is fully committed to both God’s will and God’s timing. “My hour has not come” (v. 4).
  2. Mary trusted in Jesus and his plan and timing:

…she trusted Jesus to take care of the wine situation. The Son of God can take care of everything. She submits to Him, and tells the servants to do whatever He wishes. We can learn a lot from Mary here. She lets go of her will and submits to Jesus’s will. She desires control because she wants this wedding to be wonderful, but she gives up control. She now waits to see what Jesus might do.” (p. 25).

Jesus trusted God’s timing: He is willing to wait for God’s planned time for events, and when it is time to act, Jesus acts.

Mary trusted God’s timing and will: He will take care of it!

They did so, because God is trustworthy!

Opportunity Jesus question: What is an area of life that you need to trust God and submit to His will?

“To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust..” – Psalm 25:1
