God’s Word (Daily Encouragement Series)
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither, In all that he does he prospers.” – Psalm 1:1-3
Yesterday we talked about experiencing God through “getting in the way of grace”. The next couple days we will look at some of the “stuff of everyday, basic Christianity” that are vital to experiencing God and His love. To “getting in the way of grace”.
God’s word allows us to hear God’s voice, see God’s hand and know God’s heart.
2 Timothy 3:16 says “all scripture is breathed out by God.” How do we know God? He has communicated through His word. This makes sense as it is through words that we get to know somebody, it is through words we read instructions on how to do something, it is through taking in words that we gain knowledge. Tim Keller put it this way “The Word of God is the primary way we come to understand the truth about God.”
God’s word allow us to see God’s hand – to understand his ways – and then act in light of them. 2 Timothy 3:16 says “all Scripture…is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” Scripture allows us to know God and his ways – it literally shapes everything we do – relationships, work, marriage, parenting, response to brokenness in the world – everything!
Lastly and primarily, the God’s word reveals the heart of God. 2 Timothy 3:15 says “the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.” Brian Chapell put it this way, “the Bible reveals God’s heart for his people by telling them of the salvation that is provided them through Christ Jesus.” The word of God reveals the heart of God – his love for humanity who rejected him – and his word to bring restoration to our relationship and all of creation on the Cross.
