Psalm 124 Study (Daily Encouragement)

Brian Sullivan   -

Each Monday, we are posting the study that coincides with the Psalm for the week. This is a way to “be encouraged” directly from studying and applying God’s word for yourself. We utilize these studies for the discussion at our community groups which you are always welcome to join.

Psalm 124 Study (pdf)

Read: Psalm 124

OVERVIEW: Danger takes on many forms, both externally and internally. Israel’s story is full of danger—warring with neighboring armies who wanted to destroy them, and fighting against the temptation to follow after other gods. The pilgrim-disciple confesses that, had it not been for God, all of Israel would have been consumed by enemies, dragons, and floods. This song calls us to deal honestly with our need for rescue, and to make this part of our worship as we praise God for His mercy and grace.  – He/She Reads Truth

Questions:

1. What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. (Tozer) What was a false view of God you had growing up? Now? (Distant, Out to get you, Disappointed, etc.)

2. Discuss anything from Psalm 124 or the sermon that caught your attention, challenges or confuses you.

3. This is a psalm that assures us by pointing to the defeat of past enemies through a Rescuer that delivers us. How can we be reassured by this psalm when facing present struggles & future fears?

4. The focus of Psalm 124 is on the “Helper”, not the “hazard”. Which truth of God brings comfort now?

The God who is on your side – he loves you (v/1-2)

The God who rescues – he is gracious (v/6)

The God who is your helper – he is powerful (v/8)

5. Read Hebrews 13:5-6. How does the cross prove that God is our Helper and that he will never leave us nor forsake us? How does that shape how we view life/live?
