Humility – What is it? (Daily Encouragement)

Brian Sullivan   -

The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. – Proverbs 22:4

Humility is a word like “grace”, “holy”, “mercy” which have layers of meaning and can be hard to fully define clearly in a way that captures their full essence. The Scriptures use words like selflessness, poor in spirit, openness, gentleness, reasonableness, teachability in describing humility. Proverbs 22:4 shows that at one level humility is “fear of the LORD” – an awe and reverence for God which leads to love for and trust in Him. This is in opposition to pride and putting your ultimate hope in “self”. Humility is the key to becoming a christian, growing as a christian and having a “rich” life:

Maybe you’ve heard this definition of humility: “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” Humility is a virtue we admire in others and desire most in our family members, closest friends, and confidants. Unlike pompous people, the humble are a breath of fresh air. Unlike approval junkies, the humble are low maintenance and approachable. Though not perfect, they are generally kind, modest, agreeable, respectful, and deferential in nature. They treat others as being more significant than themselves. (Scott Sauls, Jesus Outside the Lines)

A humble person doesn’t live in shame or self-hate, but with confidence and trust in God. True humility frees one from being pompous (self-important) or overly need (self-loathing). The humble are “a breath of fresh air”, “low maintenance” and “approachable”.

Ultimately to see true humility we look to Jesus, who was gentle and lowly in heart (more on that tomorrow). As we look to and follow Jesus, may we grow in humility and enjoy life to the full.
