Passage: John 21:1-25

Sections, Scripture Passages, Quotes

The chief images of John 21 – fish and sheep – both speak to us about the work of the church. We must gather up those to whom Christ directs us and nurture those who live in his flock. . . . The disciples are fishermen, seeking those Christ calls them to ‘net’ and shepherds, nurturing those who have joined the flock. But above all they are people who love the church because they love Jesus Christ.  —Gary Burge

God will provide and be present: v/1-14

Our doing for Jesus must flow from our being with Jesus – Peter Scazzero

Gives Purpose & Is Patient: v/15-19

The three questions correspond to Peter’s three denials. Three for completeness, yes, but three also for reminder. The smell of the charcoal fire lingers. Peter’s night of agony—and Jesus’ own night of agony—returns. But because of the latter, the former can be dealt with. Jesus is the Passover lamb who takes away the sin of the world, Peter’s included, your sin, my sin. – NT Wright

John 10:14-16 –  I am the good shepherd..and I lay down my life for the sheep. And I have other sheep … that I must bring in.

Jesus has prepared and calls us each Personally: v/20-25

the ministries of John and Peter would be different. Peter would be the shepherd, John the seer; Peter the preacher, John the penman; Peter the foundational witness, John the faithful writer; Peter would die in the agony and passion of martyrdom, John would live on to a great age and pass away in quiet serenity. – Bruce  Milne
