Passage: John 19:1-42

Sections, Scripture Passages, Quotes

19:1-16:  “ Behold Your King” – Why did Jesus have to die – It is God’s plan to rescue, reconcile & restore His creation

This misrepresentation, these accusations, this crown of thorns – the sharp bits of creation..drawing blood from creation’s Lord… all this is part of what it means to be God’s image planted in territory which belongs to God but which is in rebellion against him. NT Wright

19:17-30: “It is Finished” –  Why did Jesus have die? Jesus died in our place, for our sins

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.…he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. – Isaiah 53.4-5

Position in the middle | I thirst | It is finished

Sin Pollutes – darkens our life and heart —> (1 John 1:7) the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin

Sin Poisons – spoils our relationships w/God & others -> he who new no sin, became sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of God

Sin is Powerful – destructive power over our lives – addictive -> (John 8:36) if the son sets you free, you are truly free

Sin Partitions – between us & God – (2 Cor 5:19)  In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespassing

But why? Why did Jesus have to die? Because he loves us.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Gal 2:20

“It wasn’t the nails that kept Jesus there. It was love.” – Jesus Storybook Bible

v/31-42  “that you also may believe”  Why did Jesus die? So we might believe in Him

Declare – if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. – Romans 10:9

Demonstrate- By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. – 1 John 3:16
